I want to share a thought that might make you pause for a moment as you go about your busy life—whether you’re in high school, college, or just starting out in your career. I have watched a book reading video that was shared at the elementary school my three children attended. It is based on Ellen Javernick’s book entitled “What If Everybody Did That?”
The book, and also the video, are meant to inspire young children to think about their actions and the kind of people they want to become. But as I watched the video, I couldn’t help but realize that the message isn’t just for kids—it’s something we can all benefit from, no matter where we are in life.
How often do we rush into decisions without truly thinking about the consequences? Whether it’s something we say in the heat of the moment, an impulsive action we take, or even a situation we avoid, we sometimes make choices without fully considering how they’ll play out. As young adults and professionals, we’re faced with bigger decisions than ever—choices that could shape our futures and impact the people around us. And let’s be honest, in the rush of daily life, it’s easy to act without thinking.
But here’s the thing: We know, deep down, that doing something just because everyone else is doing it isn’t a solid reason to act. In fact, it’s often a shortcut to regret. That’s why we have to take a moment—just a moment—to really ask ourselves: What if everybody did this?
Imagine if everyone decided to take that shortcut, act impulsively, or speak without thinking. Would it lead to positive results? Or would the world be a little more chaotic, disconnected, or hurtful? Whether it’s the decision to skip a class or to say something we don’t mean, the reality is that our actions don’t exist in a vacuum. They have an impact—on ourselves, on those around us, and on the world at large.
So, the next time you’re faced with a choice—whether it’s about your career, relationships, or even a moment in your day—ask yourself:
1. What if everybody did that?
2. Will it lift me up or hold me back?
3. Will it bring me closer to your goals or push me further away?
It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but taking that extra second to think could make all the difference. So, let’s commit to making choices that inspire growth, responsibility, and impact—choices that we’re proud of, even when nobody’s watching.
I hope you find something in this message that resonates with you. Maybe it’s a small reminder, or maybe it’s a wake-up call to take control of your decisions. Either way, let’s keep growing, learning, and pushing ourselves to be the best versions of who we’re meant to become.
Take a moment to watch the video linked below. Share it with someone who could use this reminder, too.
Let’s keep moving forward together.
